Abstract:

This dataset was created and released by Dr. James E. Breck, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Institute for Fisheries Research, Ann Arbor. From the statewise MIRIS basemap, points were created for each lake at least 10 acres in area and placed near the outlet of the lake. For lakes with no outlet, the point was placed near the center of the lake. For each lake point, a "New_Key" was assigned based upon the numbering system for counties and lakes used by Humphreys and Green (1962). This unique lake identifier serves to link various datasets (Michigan Lakes, for example) for uses ranging from spatial representation to analysis.

Purpose:

This dataset was developed to represent the location of Michigan lakes, especially lakes 10 acres and larger. It also reflects our most current information on the outflow point of the lake. It is intended for inclusion in the Digital Water Atlas (based upon the 1:100K NHD). It is for use by MI DNR employees and other agency representatives for pursuits related to the improvment of inland lake information and aquatic resource management in Michigan.

Supplemental_Information:
