Metadata Data Set Name: Sensitive Species Data 1 Identification Information 1.1 Citation Information: 8.1 Originator: Inland Waterways Spill Response Mapping Project 8.2 Publication Date: 20001015 8.4 Title: Sensitive Species Data 1.2 Description 1.2.1 Abstract: Sensitive species data obtained from Natural Heritage Programs and, in some cases, from data reviewers, contain information about sensitive biological resources that are potentially at risk during a spill. The information is an important source of biological data on the status and location of species and ecological communities. The data represent species of either special concern, or federally or state, threatened or endangered status. 1.2.2 Purpose: This data set was created for the purpose of aiding responders in developing site-specific response. 1.2.3 Supplemental Information: To obtain further information about the sensitive species data, compare the values in the item ICON from the sens_spp.dbf to Appendix B. Sensitive Species and Natural Communities. This will provide you with the Species Group Name and the species status. These data sets are provided as an ARC/INFO export file and an ArcView shapefile. 1.3 Time Period Of Content 9.2 Multiple Dates/Times 9.2.1 Calendar Date: 19991104 9.2.1 Calendar Date: 20000809 9.2.1 Calendar Date: 20000605 1.4 Status 1.4.1 Progress: Complete 1.4.2 Maintenance and Update Frequency: Annually 1.5 Geographic Extent 1.5.1 Description of Geographic Extent: The Western Lake Superior area consists of Carlton, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis counties in Minnesota, and Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, and Iron counties in Wisconsin. 1.5.2 Bounding Rectangle Coordinates 1.5.2.1 West Bounding Coordinate: -93.082 1.5.2.2 East Bounding Coordinate: -89.563 1.5.2.3 North Bounding Coordinate: 48.627 1.5.2.4 South Bounding Coordinate: 45.979 1.6 Keywords 1.6.1.2 Theme Keyword: habitat 1.6.1.2 Theme Keyword: sensitive species 1.6.1.2 Theme Keyword: ecological communitites 1.9 Use Constraints: Minnesota Heritage Disclaimer: Rare features data included here were provided by the Natural Heritage and Nongame Research Program of the Division of Fish and Wildlife, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and were current as of 11/4/1999. These data are not based on an exhaustive inventory of the state. The lack of data for any geographic area shall not be construed to mean that no significant features are present. Please be aware that this atlas is a coarse representation of Wisconsin Natural Heritage Inventory (NHI) data, and while this is the most up-to-date and comprehensive database on the occurrences of rare species and natural communities available, there are many areas of the state that have not been inventoried. Similarly, the presence of a rare species at a location does not imply that all taxonomic groups have been surveyed at that site. As such, the data should be interpreted with caution and an "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence" philosophy followed. It is understood, therefore, that those using this atlas in the event of an oil spill emergency use this atlas as an initial review only, and that they will contact the Wisconsin Bureau of Endangered Resources for more accurate analysis of the risks to Wisconsin's endangered resources. Vascular plants, birds, amphibians and reptiles, mammals, invertebrates, and natural communities each were further grouped into two subcategories, on the basis of species habitat location in terrestrial/upland areas or in aquatic/riparian areas. The latter grouping was designated if any critical life stage took place in an aquatic or riparian habitat. The point data were overlaid with a fishnet hexagon coverage to create a polygon layer. A frequency table was generated containing the hexagon id, species category, and federal and state status. A new database was created with these items and was joined to the polygon coverage. Hexagons that did not contain occurrences of any species or hexagons that were outside of the study area were removed. 2.5.3.3 Process Date: 20001002 2.5.3.6 Process Contact: 10.1 Contact Person Primary 10.1.1 Contact Person: Lynne DeHaan 10.1.2 Contact Organization: UMESC-EPA 10.4 Contact Address 10.4.1 Address Type: Mailing and Physical Address 10.4.2 Address: 575 Lester Ave. 10.4.3 City: Onalaska 10.4.4 State or Province: Wisconsin 10.4.5 Postal Code: 54650 10.4.6 Country: USA 10.5 Contact Voice Telephone: 1-608-783-7550, ext. 30 10.8 Contact Electronic Mail Address: lynne_dehaan@usgs.gov 10.9 Hours of Service: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday 3 Spatial Data Organization Information 4 Spatial Reference Information 4.1 Horizontal Coordinate System Definition 4.1.2 Geographic 4.1.1.3 Decimal Degrees 5 Entity and Attribute Information 6 Distribution Information 6.1 Distributor 10.2 Contact Organization Primary 10.1.2 Contact Organization: USGS-Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center 10.4 Contact Address 10.4.1 Address Type: Mailing and Physical Address 10.4.2 Address: 575 Lester Avenue 10.4.3 City: Onalaska 10.4.4 State or Province: Wisconsin 10.4.5 Postal Code: 54650 10.4.6 Country: USA 10.5 Contact Voice Telephone: (608) 783-7550 10.9 Hours of Service: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday 6.3 Distribution Liability: Redistribution of copyrighted digital data sets (Minnesota and Wisconsin Natural Heritage data) or products derived therefrom is expressly forbidden through the licensing agreement with the Minnesota and Wisconsin Heritage Programs.
