Abstract:

This data set depicts refuge boundary information for National Wildlife Refuges, National Fish Hatcheries and USFWS administrative sites. Coverage is nationwide, but does not yet include all refuges. The primary source for boundary information is the USFWS Realty and Refuge Planning programs (land status maps, planning documents, and legal surveys) in the regions.

Purpose:

The intended application of the data is to serve as a spatial reference of facility boundaries for other data layers in GIS and mapping applications. It is specifically not intended to be used as a land survey or representation of land for conveyance or tax purposes. This data set in particular has been generalized even more than the individual refuges data sets and is intended solely as an overview or locator map.

Digital boundaries are checked by staff in each region for the individual refuge maps. The combined maps were compared to the boundaries on the original maps for accuracy, and also checked against Corporate Master Table data for attribute content.

Logical_Consistency_Report: All polygons are closed and all dangling arcs are removed.

Completeness_Report:

This data set is not complete, there are facilities in almost every region that have not yet been mapped.

The boundaries were compiled individually from various sources. They were imported into ArcView 3.2 and uniformly defined, attributed and appended into a single coverage for each region. All attributes that were added to the coverages came from the Corporate Master table, which is verified twice a year and contains address and other contact information.
